What inspired you to start your Blog?

Back in 2011, my health was on a downward slide, fast. I’d developed hypertension, pre-diabetes and had a BMI of 35.  My diet consisted of mostly fast food, bland tasting yellow and brown junk. I didn’t do any exercise and had started to get out of breath just walking up my stairs! One day I just woke up and thought, “you know what, I can’t live like this anymore!” and I started logging my food using a smartphone app, exercising using a Nintendo Wii and bought a few recipe books.

I started my blog in 2012 after losing 60lbs and reversing hypertension and prediabetes. I wanted to share my recipes as well as review of fitness products like heart rate monitors, fitness games, health books and gym wear.

What makes you unique in the Fitness and Health Space?

I haven’t always been fit and healthy. I’ve been the obese teen that skipped PE lessons and ate junk food. I know how it feels to want to laze around and binge on junk food and I know how hard it is to muster the determination to turn it all around.

Also, *whispers* I have never tried avocado!

What Diet/Nutrition practices do you advocate?

Cooking hearty meals from scratch. Most of my recipes only take around 20 minutes to cook (the same length of time it takes for a pizza to arrive!). I make sure that I use wholegrain pasta and rice, lean meats, and plenty of veggies.

I wouldn’t advocate for cutting out entire food groups or particular ingredients – I think that’s faddy and unsustainable, unless of course you have an allergy or intolerance.

What Exercise advice would you share with the average Joe looking to add muscle and get fit?

Free weights or body weight exercises are king for adding muscle. If you’re not sure where to start in the weights room, then I recommend trying classes like Les Mills Body Pump to get an idea of the sort of free weights exercises to do. Then progress from there into the weights rooms and reduce reps while gradually increasing weight. For cardio, I recommend HIIT (high intensity interval training) dvds like Insanity – great for burning fat!  I also love yoga as it relaxes me and increases my flexibility and helps me recover from weights and HIIT sessions.
